Due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the 16th World Leisure Congress (WLC), scheduled for October this year, has been postponed and will be held from April 15-21, 2021 in Pinggu District, Beijing, upon approval by the Beijing Municipal Government and the World Leisure Organization. The postponed congress will still be called the “Beijing·Pinggu 2020 World Leisure Congress” and its emblem will remain unchanged.

The WLC is the most influential academic event in the world leisure field. The 16th WLC upholds the concept of all-for-one leisure covering all the year and all the people, and principles of environment friendly, sharing, openness, integrity and innovation. With a pattern of “1+4+N,” it will have a main venue, four parallel venues and 13 special activities.
The congress will comprise conferences at the main venue, exhibitions, other activities and parallel venue activities, all of which will present the Beijing·Pinggu 2020 World Leisure Congress in an all-round way from multiple perspectives. The congress will host an opening ceremony, a closing ceremony, an award-giving ceremony, a key academic forum, 14 parallel forums and other special activities, with the aim of illustrating the diversity of leisure and spreading the concept of leisure for all.
Throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, Pinggu has reported zero confirmed cases due to its all-out epidemic prevention and control efforts. In the meantime, the preparatory work for the WLC has been advancing in a steady way.
Construction of the venues has been accelerated and the main venue will be completed soon. The affiliated hotel will be put into operation in September. The main structure of the traffic hub has been completed while eight supporting facilities, including those for water, power, natural gas, heating and roads, are under construction. Construction and operation planning for the parallel venues are advancing simultaneously.
The organization committee of the congress will be officially set up soon, with the organization plan and preparatory activities for the congress improved. Planning for 13 activities during the congress, such as outdoor activities and traditional Chinese leisure games, has been completed.
Evaluation for the International Leisure Lifestyle Cases Award has started. Some 254 theses have been collected from home and abroad, attracting 30,000 readers. A green paper, Beijing Leisure Development Report, has been drafted. Publicity for the congress and the influence of the leisure brands have been growing through renowned exhibition platforms such as the World Tourism Cities Federation Summit and China International Travel Mart.
In 2021, Pinggu will host the postponed grand global leisure event in the midst of a sea of peach blossoms. Welcome to Beijing, and welcome to Pinggu!
